The Nordic Swan is a Nordic eco-label which is managed by Ecolabelling Denmark. It guarantees that special consideration has been given to the environment, climate, quality and sustainability from raw material processing to production, use and purchase of the finished product. In order to get a licence to label a product or service with the Nordic eco-label, the manufacturer must meet strict requirements concerning documentation, raw materials, production process, product composition and safety. The Asthma-Allergy label, the Blue Wreath, is a Danish certification system run by AAD (Astma-Allergi Danmark). Products marked with this logo ensure minimum risk of skin irritation, eczema and allergy. Such products do not contain any perfume, dyes or product makeup, and their ingredients and composition are thoroughly assessed by experienced toxicology experts.

FSC® is an international eco-labelling organisation which deals with wood fibre products. FSC-certified products are made of raw materials from protected, sustainable forests where only as much as can be sustained by the forest is harvested and the traceability and integrity of the eco-label are maintained through comprehensive control measure.


ECOCERT, the first certification body for natural and organic cosmetics, ensures that products meet high environmentally friendly standards, straight from ingredients to packaging. Only products with a minimum of 95% naturally sourced ingredients by weight are eligible for certification.

The Flower is a European eco-label which offers the same guarantees as the Nordic Swan and it too is managed by Ecolabelling Denmark. The essential difference between the two eco-labels is that the Nordic Swan comes from the Nordic Council of Ministers and is used in the Nordic countries whereas the Flower was established by the European Commission and is used in the EU.

Fairtrade is an international labelling system aimed at improving the working conditions, terms of trade and living conditions of some of the poorest farmers and workers. Fairtrade currently contributes to the progress of farmers and plantation workers in Asia, Africa and South and Central America. Farmers are paid a fairer price for their raw products and are given the opportunity to invest in education, health care or better production conditions. Fairtrade also stands for minimised environmental footprint


The Recycling Label is a Danish eco-labelling system which shows that the product in question is either made of recycled materials or can be recycled. Products with the Recycling Label in Abena's product range consist 100% of recycled plastics collected from recycling centres etc. which plastics is melted into reclaimed products and extruded to a refuse sack during a resource-saving project that protects the environment.

OK compost is an international eco-label managed by the Belgium certification organisation Vinçotte. The OK compost label guarantees that the product thus labelled is 100% biodegradable in industrial compost facilities.

DIN CERTCO is a certification organisation based in Germany, which deals with i.a. compostable products of biodegradable materials. Products in Abena’s product range labelled with the certification standard DIN EN 13432 are biodegradable and at least 90% of the organic materials are transformed into CO2 and absorbed by microorganisms. The red "Ø" logo is a Danish eco-label managed by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. The eco-label guarantees that the products in question comply with EU regulations relating to eco-friendly agricultural production and that special considerations have been taken with regard to the environment and animal welfare. The regulations comprise, amongst other things, requirements relating to foodstuffs, manure and GMO, as well as ingredients in the finished product.

Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 is the most well-known and most widespread label of sustainable textiles and textile products worldwide. This standard imposes strict requirements with regard to chemicals and dyes used in textile production. Products labelled "Confidence in Textiles" are exclusively tested by institutions (in the EU and Japan) that are members of the Oeko-Tex® Association. They are a guarantee that the Oeko-Tex®-labelled products have the least possible risk of consumer exposure to harmful chemicals.

The CE mark is established by the EU Commission and is the consumer's guarantee that the product in question complies with common European safety requirements. The CE mark gives consumers peace of mind so they can use the products with this logo without worrying about where they have been manufactured. Certain products such as medical equipment and protective gear must be CE marked in order to be marketed in the European Union.


The Re3 label is Abena's own eco-label for plastic bags. It stands for Re-duce, Re-use and Re-cycle. The Re3 concept is aimed at reducing raw material consumption in the original production of plastics, to ensure that the finished products are recycled and to use waste plastics in the production of new products. Plastic bags with the Re3 mark have a unique characteristic - they consist of 100% production waste and the sustainable manufacturing process is the reason for the very low CO2 discharge.

The wine glass and fork symbol is a labelling system introduced by the EU which shows that the product in question is safe for food contact. When manufacturers or distributors choose to label their products with the wine glass and fork symbol, they have to comply with current regulations concerning food safety, materials, traceability, labelling etc. and must be able to attest before the authorities that the regulations are complied with.

The Blue Angel is the oldest and most well known eco-label on a global scale. The system is managed by German environmental authorities on the basis of several quality criteria laid down in cooperation with, amongst other things, environment and consumer organisations and other relevant experts. In order to have the Blue Angel, products must comply with several conditions starting with the principle "from the cradle to the grave", and including environmentally friendly production and procurement, long product service life and considerations relating to health, working conditions and use of raw materials.


UTZ Certified is an eco-labelling system for coffee, cacao and tea products. The organisation strives for better conditions and opportunities for farmers, their families and the environment. The UTZ programme allows farmers to improve their farming methods and working conditions and take better care of their children and the natural resources they live on.

When used on a product, the European green leaf certifies that the product meets the organic farming sector requirements and guidelines set up by the EU. This means that 95% of the product is made of organic ingredients and materials.

The Green Dot ("Der Grüne Punkt") on products indicates that the manufacturer has contributed with financial support to a packaging collection organisation in compliance with EU directive No. 94/62 and relevant national laws.


GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE (BRA MILJÖVAL), also called the Falcon, is the eco-label of the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. GOOD ENVIRONMENTAL CHOICE has existed since 1992 and is privately-owned. It has varying eco-labelling criteria for more than 12 product groups and covers approximately 750 products. The core areas of this eco-label include paper and cleaning products.

The Cradle to Cradle concept is a comprehensive design tool and an environment certificate for companies and organisations that want to design products and systems which apart from polluting less also contribute to a better environment. The objective is to design products and systems in the circular economy so that they can be transformed into new resources after being used to the benefit of all people and the environment now and in the future. PEFC™ is an international forest certification system that guarantees that PEFC-labelled products come from forests managed in accordance with several environmental performance and sustainability requirements. PEFC-certified forest management takes into account forest production, soundness and resources by using varying wood species adapted to the local climate, promoting natural and diverse growth, protecting the flora and fauna as well as reducing tillage and the use of pesticides, fertilisers etc.
