Abena's Calcium Alginate Dressing with Silver is made of natural fibers derived from seaweed. It is designed to be highly absorbent and form a gel-like covering over the wound, to help maintain a moist environment that promotes wound healing. The gel-like surface also helps keep the dressing from adhering to the wound, which aids to minimize discomfort upon removal. The most fascinating aspect about this dressing is that it can restrain bacteria growth and help reduce infection.

While being in the form of encapsulated metallic silver, they are very stable and will not be oxidized even on exposure to light.
Figure 1 shows that Abena’s Calcium Alginate Dressing with Silver releases about 0.284ug of the total silver during the first 24 hours, and 0.1485ug, 0.1215ug of its total silver during 24-48, 48-72 hours, respectively. The silver kills the bacteria in the dressing and can also inhibit growth of bacteria from forming in the dressing.
